Umeå is located in northern Sweden with more than 127,000 inhabitants the largest city north of Stockholm. Umeå has a strong profile of culture, and in 2014 the city was the European Capital of Culture. We are also known as the city of birch trees.Umeå University, establishment in 1965, has 34 000 students from 60 countries studying in 150 programmes and 1,800 courses, of which over 40 programmes and 450 courses use English instruction. It is a full range university consisting of four faculties, 39 departments and units, 16 research centres (equivalents), and has a staff of 4051. Umeå University has almost 400 partner universities all over the world, and 900 exchange agreements. Umeå University is ranked in the top 1% bracket of universities in the world. Our Institute of Design is ranked as the best in the world.
Arctic Research Centre was established in 2012 at the Umeå University. Arcum offers excellent prospects for internal and multi-disciplinary cooperation. With more than 320 affiliated researchers at Umeå University the centre assembles a strong research environment with national proficiency in extensive research areas. 2014-2017 Arcum hosted the IASSA Secretariat and has been responsible for a number of international events. In October 2019 the European Commission held its Arctic Stakeholder Meeting at our campus, back to back with a Barents Ministerial Meeting and the Indigenous Forum.Umeå University hosts the only indigenous research center in Sweden (Vardduo - Centre for Sami Research).
